Pit and Fissure Sealants
What are dental sealants?
Pit and fissure sealants are plastic applications that are spread over the chewing surfaces of back teeth and help in preventing decay. The plastic covers all the pits and fissures in the teeth and shield the enamel from acids and bacteria that lead to decay.
Is Brushing and Flossing Sufficient?
Brushing and flossing regularly removes food particles and plaque build-up on all the smooth surfaces of your teeth. However, bristles of the toothbrush are not able to clean the grooves and depressions in the teeth effectively. On the other hand, sealants provide protection to these areas and bacteria and food particles cannot get wedged in them.
Procedure for Applying a Sealant
There is no requirement for a local anaesthetic when the pits and fissure sealants are being placed on the teeth. It takes only a few minutes for the sealants to be applied and we can do this very simply for you. Our dentist will first clean all the teeth that need to be sealed. If we find any decay, a drill will be used to remove it.
Once the chewing surfaces have been roughened with an acid solution, the sealant is then brushed onto the teeth. After it has bonded with the teeth, it hardens and creates a coating. We might even use a curing light to hasten the hardening process.
Who can use Dental Sealants
Dental decay can start very early-on in children and we recommend that pits and fissure sealants be applied to the child's or teenager's molars and premolars for effective protection. Dental Sealants can be beneficial for adults too.
Are Dental Sealants long-lasting?
Sealants are an excellent protection for teeth surfaces. They are long-lasting and can generally last for several years, after which a reapplication might be required. They are the best protection against tooth decay. We will check the condition of the sealants when you come in for your regular dental check-ups and if necessary, a reapplication will be carried out.
How safe are Sealants?
Sealants are very safe. However, they might not be suitable for people who are allergic to plastic. Let us know if your children or you are suffer from allergies and we will provide the most suitable treatment options. The dental sealants that we use do not contain BisphenolA (BPA).
