Root Canal Diagnosis

Saving a Tooth with a Root Canal

Root canal therapy is used to save a tooth that has become infected or has dead pulp. The procedure is quite a comfortable one at our Hamilton family dentistry clinic, will save the tooth and help you to maintain good oral health.

Root Canal Symptoms

The following are symptoms of tooth infection:

  • The tooth is extra-sensitive to hot or cold
  • There is pain while biting/chewing or when pressure is applied
  • Severe tooth pain that is accompanied by throbbing
  • There is swelling around the affected tooth
  • There is a bad taste in the mouth

In some cases, there might not be any symptoms at all and this makes it difficult for you to know if the problem exists.

The Causes of Root Canal Infection

The pulp of the tooth gets infected when its inner layers are infected with bacteria. Nerves & blood vessels form the pulp of the tooth and the pulp chamber in the center of the tooth holds it. This chamber stretches right down to the root of the tooth. In most cases, the pulp infection occurs via a deep cavity that permits the bacteria to penetrate the enamel and the dentin layers. Injury can also lead to death of the pulp tissue.

The Right Diagnosis & Treatment for a Root Canal

If you suffer from any of the symptoms mentioned above, we carry out a thorough check-up of your tooth and might take X-rays and test the pulp utilizing a pulp tester. We check the tooth for sensitivity to heat/cold/pressure and also scrutinize it for discolouration. The surrounding gum tissue is checked for symptoms of pain.

If we find that the tooth is infected, we will discuss root canal therapy which will rid the tooth of the infection and save it. The infected tooth has to be treated to prevent the infection from travelling to the root.
