Care Following Bone Graft Or Implant Replacement

  • Rest – We advise you to rest with no vigorous activity for 24 hours following the procedure.
  • Salt Water Rinse – We advise doing mouth rinses using a saline solution the morning after the procedure. Mix 1 teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of warm water and stir until salt is dissolved. Do this 4-5 times per day, rinsing for 30-60 seconds each time.
  • Pain Relievers – Prescribed pain medication should be taken as soon as possible before the freezing wears off. Use thereafter as directed.
  • Chewing - Avoid chewing in the area(s) where the surgery has been done.
  • Smoking - Refrain from smoking for as long as possible. Smoking can lead to infection of the area and can also increase the risk of developing a dry socket.
  • Alcohol And Hot Beverages - Do NOT drink hot beverages for at least 48 hours, and no alcohol for a minimum of 7 days. Hot beverages will cause some searing pain, while alcohol will dry out your mouth as well as thin your blood.
  • Temporary Denture/Provisional Partial Dentures - To be worn minimally during the first several days. When not used for aesthetic reasons, they can/should be removed.
  • Dressing or Surgical Packs – These may be placed to protect the affected area and can occasionally get dislodged or broken apart. Depending on the type of surgery performed, they may require replacement.
