After getting a bone graft or undergoing dental implant surgery, there's a lot on your mind. You might be a little overwhelmed after the operation, and us explaining to you the steps you should take after a bone graft may easily be forgotten. It's easily to misplace our instructions as well, which is why we are offering up a list of instructions.
Rest - This is advisable with no vigorous activity for 24 hours following procedure.
Salt Water Rinse - Should begin the morning after procedure. Mix 1 teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water and stir until salt is dissolved. Do this 4-5 times per day, rinsing for 30-60 second each time.
Pain Relievers - Should be taken as soon as possible before the freezing wears off. Use thereafter as directed.
Chewing - Avoid chewing in the area(s) where the surgery has been done
Smoking - Refrain from smoking for as long as possible. Smoking can lead to infection of the area and can also increase the risk of developing a dry socket.
Alcohol And Hot Beverages - Do NOT drink hot beverages for at least 48 hours and no alcohol for a minimum of 7 days. Hot Beverages will cause some searing pain, and alcohol will dry out your mouth as well as thin your blood.
Temporary Denture/Provisional Partial Dentures - To be worn minimally during the first several days. When not being used for aesthetic reasons, they can/should be removed.
Dressing or surgical packs may be placed to protect the area and occasionally these can become dislodged or break apart. Depending on the type of surgery performed, they may require replacement.
If you had a graft and the dressing moves or comes off, please contact our Stoney Creek dental office.
